There are a number of things to consider when buying a helmet for your child. The helmet should sit comfortably on the head and not obstruct during play. It should be easy to use and protect against hard blows and knocks. But did you know that a helmet with a green buckle can save lives?
Children under the age of seven should always wear a helmet with a green buckle. Your child can wear the helmet for all outdoor activities where a helmet is required, e.g. cycling, scooting, skateboarding, sledging. STIGA’s Play helmets are designed for active children and therefore feature the green buckle so that your child can cycle, scoot and play safely. You can read more about our helmets with the green buckle here.
Children are playful and impulsive, hence it's not always certain they'll remember to remove their helmet when they jump off their bike or scooter in order to play or climb the climbing frame. The green buckle is a safety device that opens automatically when pressure is applied, thus minimising the risk of your child getting stuck with the helmet on.
The recommendation that children up to the age of seven should wear a helmet with a green buckle (link in Swedish) is an agreement signed by several Swedish authorities and major cycling industry organisations, including the Swedish Consumer Agency, NTF (The National Society for Road Safety), Uppsala University Hospital and Cykelbranschen. At STIGA Sports, we are firmly behind this important initiative. The recommendation has been placed for children under the age of seven because it is expected that older children remove their helmet when they jump off their bike or scooter.
The helmet must have a CE marking.
The helmet should sit firmly and cover the forehead, the occiput (back of head) and crown.
The helmet should be easy to put on and take off.
The buckle in the chin strap should not pinch or squeeze the skin.
Children under the age of 7 should always use a helmet with a green buckle.
Please replace the helmet with a new one if it has been subject to hard blows or knocks.
